🇬🇧 Regarding heat resistance, I went down another “rabbit hole” and that is clothing, or rather sweat. I had a hunch about this before, but only now am I starting to take it seriously. Sweat doesn’t cool the body just by being wet. For thermal energy to be released from the body, sweat must evaporate from the skin, or rather from its immediate vicinity. If it doesn’t evaporate but just runs down or evaporates inside a loose jersey, it’s just a pointless loss of water.
Then, of course, there’s the question of whether it’s worth wearing an ultralight baselayer in such heat. Apparently, it’s worthwhile up to about 30 degrees; after that, it’s better to wear nothing. A baselayer serves, among other things, to spread sweat over a larger area, making it easier to evaporate. But for this to work, both the baselayer and the jersey must be sufficiently tight-fitting; otherwise, the sweat doesn’t evaporate from the skin. Which was quite a problem in my case. My jersey stays tight for about one race. Since I wear it for maybe 12 days in a row, the fabric can’t take it and gives up. So, a tight fit isn’t just for aerodynamics, but also for thermoregulation. It’s probably better to buy more cheaper jerseys and rotate them than to have one expensive one and wear it until it falls apart.
